Context
The WOBART Bike Station sits at the threshold between the West Oakland BART station and the surrounding neighborhood — a place where the daily commute meets the street. The project began with a series of site visits to other BART stations to better understand layout, material performance and cyclists' needs.
Challenge
The site is constrained by BART infrastructure above and active pedestrian flows on three sides. The program — secure parking for 300+ bikes — had to be legible and welcoming from the street without interrupting the flow of commuters. The project confronted a familiar urban reality: bike theft is a common concern. Yet rather than allowing security to define the user experience, the design sought to balance protection with openness. Bike lockers are woven into the façade, becoming an architectural element, while carefully filtered views provide natural surveillance without creating a fortress-like appearance.
