Big advances in society have always been powered by people. We believe that by applying the lessons and tools from the private sector – and building a similar ecosystem of City of Oakland service providers, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders – the City of Oakland can increase the likelihood of success for civic ventures and create transformative change in how the City of Oakland operates internally, as well as externally with our communities.
The City Hall Civic Incubator will be dedicated to providing resources, education and professional development to City staff.
This is a space for people to build their skills. This is a space where we share knowledge, lend a hand, and give feedback. Our goal is to foster a sustainable collaborative work environment right here in City Hall.

It is really concerning to see the state of some neighborhoods in Oakland. These communities reflect social and political decisions throughout history and, consequently, their impact on the urban land, but particularly the poorer communites. The enduring inequities are undeniable. So Oak!LAB was created to focus on Far East and the San Pablo districts of Oakland. Our projects vary in scale - the urban territory, neighborhoods, individual buildings and forgotten spaces. Working with these communities, all efforts operate at the intersection of multi-disciplinary investigations and social speculation. This productive cooperation tackles physical space to arrive at the EMERGENCE of healthier COMMUNITIES.
OAK!LAB embraces existing humanity and social conditions while using architecture to empower, enable and make humanity visible. Oak!LAB is about direct participation. Community residents are part of our team - we brain-storm, research, design, prepare documentation and fabricate with us. Design has the power to RECONNECT PEOPLE and ACTUALIZE of our greatest aspirations. Oak!LAB's mission is about allowing better environments to take root.
