OAK!LAB

 INTERSECTIONS - spring 2018

DIMENSIONS OF CITIZENSHIP- It is deeply concerning to see the state of some neighborhoods in Oakland.  These communities reflect social and political decisions throughout history and, consequently, but particularly the impact is most apparent in the poorer communities. The enduring inequities are undeniable.  Design has the power to RECONNECT PEOPLE and ACTUALIZE our greatest aspirations by embracing existing humanity, social conditions and working with these communities in direct participation

  • 30% of our practice is community-based. That is why we created OAK!LAB - to provide architecture that empowers, enables and makes humanity visible.
  • Oak!LAB operates at the intersection of multi-disciplinary investigations and social speculation. Projects vary in scale -  the urban territory, neighborhoods, individual buildings and forgotten spaces. .
  • Oak!LAB is physical work geared towards the EMERGENCE of healthier COMMUNITIES.
  • Oak!LAB's focus is Oakland - Hoover Foster/West Oakland and Deep-East Oakland districts.
  • Oak!LAB is funded through sale of our object designs.

Community Change

OUTCOMES
Big advances in society have always been powered by people. We believe that by applying the lessons and tools from the private sector – and building a similar ecosystem of City ofOakland service providers, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders – the City can increase the likelihood of success and create transformative change in how the it operates internally, as well as externally with our communities.

THE CITY BUDGET PROCESS
Often, Communities sense they are acted upon rather than collaborated with. Being a participatory population, architects can augment community voice by articulating their desires through reports and diagrams - community planning services.
